Questions massage and spa owners ask about marketing

Straight answers on reviews, online booking, Instagram, Google and Meta ad rules, memberships, no-shows, the benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.

How many Google reviews does a massage business need?

Enough to beat the three listings you appear beside. Across 70,932 massage and spa listings the median is 22 reviews and 33.8% have fewer than 10. In a competitive suburb the studios holding the map pack are usually past 100, a level only 20.3% reach. One review per working day is a realistic pace when the therapist asks at the front desk instead of emailing later. The reviews guide has the exact wording.

Do I really need online booking?

Yes, and it is the cheapest fix on this list. A client deciding at 10 p.m. that her neck hurts will book with whoever lets her pick a time without talking to a person. MassageBook, Vagaro and Mindbody all publish a bookable link you can attach to your Google profile, your Instagram bio and your site. Phone-only scheduling quietly hands your late-night demand to the franchise down the road.

Can I even run Google Ads for massage?

Yes, with care. Google restricts adult content and sexual services, and generic massage terms attract that traffic, so accounts get disapprovals when the landing page is vague. Use clinical language (deep tissue, prenatal, sports recovery, myofascial), name your license or the therapists' credentials on the landing page, and add a long negative keyword list. Details in the Google Ads guide.

Why does Meta keep rejecting my spa ads?

Meta treats body-focused imagery and health claims as sensitive. Ads showing bare skin close up, before-and-after body shots, or copy implying a medical outcome get pulled. What passes: the room, the table, the therapist's hands on a shoulder, a candle, a face at rest, plain copy about a service and a price. See the Instagram and Facebook ads guide.

Are memberships worth the discount?

For most spas, yes. A member paying monthly for one massage produces predictable revenue, books more often than a drop-in client, and rolls unused credits forward, which is what keeps franchises full. The discount only hurts if you sell it to clients who were already booking twice a month at full price. The pricing guide covers how to structure it.

How do I stop no-shows?

Take a card on file at booking, state a 24-hour cancellation policy in the confirmation, and send reminders at 48 and 3 hours. Charging 50% for a late cancel is standard and clients accept it when they saw it before they booked. A single empty 60-minute slot costs you the full ticket, since the therapist is still paid or the room still sits idle.

Is Instagram actually worth the time?

It is the primary visual channel for this trade, and it converts best as proof rather than promotion. Room photos, a 15-second shot of the linens being turned over, a therapist explaining what cupping marks mean. Post two or three times a week and keep the booking link in the bio. Instagram rarely produces a flood of new clients on its own; it closes the ones who already heard your name.

When should I push gift cards?

Start the last week of October, not December. Gift card revenue for spas concentrates in the six weeks before Christmas, then again around Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. Selling the card is only half of it, though. Track redemptions and text the recipient a booking link, because an unredeemed card is a client you never met.

How do I compete with a franchise chain?

Not on price and not on hours. Compete on the therapist. Chains rotate staff, cap session length in practice, and sell a contract people struggle to cancel. Say plainly on your site who works on you, how long they have practiced, and what they specialize in. Then match the two conveniences chains win on: online booking and evening or weekend availability. Only 39.3% of listings show Sunday hours.

Is the benchmark data trustworthy?

It is public data collected at scale, so treat it as accurate to a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place ID and refreshed monthly. Google does not publish these distributions, which is why we compute them. The method is on the about page.

Where does the benchmark data come from?

Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for massage therapists, massage spas and day spas in every state. Only public business fields are stored. No reviewer names, no client information.

What is included in the free 14-day trial?

Any one of the services we run, or several at once: Google Ads, Instagram and Facebook ads, AI search visibility, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, social media management, review generation, missed-call text-back, email and SMS rebooking campaigns, bookkeeping, and cold-call appointment setting. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you choose to run ads, stays yours.

What happens after the 14 days?

You choose. Keep the service at the monthly price quoted before the trial starts, switch to something else, or stop. Nothing renews on its own and nothing is billed during the trial.

Do I have to put a card down?

No. There is no card on file. We need access to the accounts involved and about 20 minutes on a setup call. Most services are live within 48 hours; a new website takes roughly a week to first draft. Start on the free trial page.
